I rigtig mange år har min far haft alkohol problemer. Jeg er ikke sikker på hvornår det rigtigt startede, men det var før både mig og min storebror(24år) blev født, i følge min mor. Jeg vil selv klassifisere ham som en “velfungerende alkoholiker”. Det skal forståes i, at min far har hele sit liv arbejdet i olie industrien og har derfor været på specielle vagtplaner. Så som 2 uger ude og så 2 uger hjemme. Han drikker aldrig en dråbe når han er på job. Men når han så kommer hjem igen, åbnes der op for vodka flasken, og på de fleste aftener er det en halv flaske – andre gange mere. Nogle gange er det hver dag i en uge, andre gange holder han lige en “slapper” og nøjes med et par øl.
I mine helt unge år(0-15) oplevede jeg aldrig det her problem særlig stort, da jeg ikke var gammel nok til helt at fatte hvad der foregik og m jeg kan tydelig mærke og hører på min mor, at der var mange dårlige episoder og at det virkelig tog hårdt på min mor. Som hun selv siger det: Så glædte han sig mere til sin vodka flaske, end hans kone..
Når han så drikker, bliver han rigtig nemt irreteret. Selv de mindste ting kan få ham til at snap og blive rigtig sur.
En speciel episode hvor jeg fik et ordenlig spark i ryggen og blev kaldt en “ungrateful little cock sucker” har jeg aldrig rigtig glemt. Jeg var 16 år her.
Det var nemlig omkring den her alder, jeg begyndte at få en ide om at min far var “deltids-alkoholiker”. Jeg kunne slet ikke have det. Han blev mere doven og ligeglad for at gemme det fra mig og jeg oplevede flere gange om ugen min far være helt passed out, i kontoret, på toilettet, i dagligstuen…
Jeg, ligesom mange andre havde virkelig svært ved at tale om det i starten og jeg synes det var drøn pinligt han skulle være der helt væk… Når jeg havde venner ovre til noget lan party, ville jeg spørge ham pænt: Vil du ikke lade være med at drik i aften eller i det mindste holde dig væk hvis du bliver fuld” Her var det tit det modsatte der skete.
Episoder som dette har været meget gentagene de sidste par år – og de ender tit med kæmpe skænderier mellem mig og min far. Ofte fordi jeg er en utaknemmelig lille lort, som ikke passer det jeg skal – om det rengøring, svare tilbage på aftensmad beskeder eller hvad end det kan være i hans øjne – og for mig: hans drikken.
Jeg synes det er svært for mig formulere det korrekt. Men jeg kan ærligt tilstå, at jeg ikke er den søn overfor ham, som jeg er for min mor. Jeg har mistet noget respekt og tillid til ham, som jeg virkelig ikke ved kommer tilbage igen. Og jeg har det virkelig dårligt med behandle ham ret dårligt, men jeg kan bare ikke lade være med at tænke over alt det lort han har skabt for mig, min bror og mor. Så det lidt som om, det ofte sker uden jeg tænker over det hvis det giver mening?
Min bror har altid været meget genert og bare ignoreret problemet. Min mor gik i gennem mange år rigtig ked af det, men for 1 år siden forlod hun ham, og begynder nu at få det bedre på basis af, at hun har accepteret hans drikken og ikke ser ham fuld længere. Det samme har min bror tildels gjort.
Men jeg kan ikke få mig selv til at acceptere det. Hvilket gør vi stadig knalder hoveder sammen. Og jeg bliver så træt af, at jeg hele tiden skal undskylde for små ting som at glemme skraldespanden om tirsdagen eller fordi jeg glemte en tallerken på mit værelse. Når han aldrig skal undskylde for de utallige bommerter han har lavet.
Jeg har stadig til denne dag, aldrig fået en ordenlig undskyldning fra ham.
Jeg er så fyldt op med vrede og samtidig har jeg problemer ved siden af det her, der gør mit liv er i ubalance. Det eneste jeg vil, er virkelig at komme videre. Men jeg tror bare ikke jeg kan gøre det på samme måde som min mor og bror. JEG ELSKER JO MIN FAR FOR FANDEN! Han er så god en far på mange måder, og ønsker han ville droppe hans alkoholen for hans helbreds skyld.
Det gør også at jeg føler mor og brormand har givet op på far. At jeg er den eneste der stadig prøver at hjælpe ham af med dette problem.
For nogle dage siden smed han mig ud af huset. Fordi han mente jeg ikke levede op til hans krav, for at bo i huset. Så nu føler jeg, at han har givet på mig… Så nu ved jeg ikke hvad jeg skal gøre. Jeg har næsten også lyst til at give op på ham.. Hvad synes i jeg kan gøre?

Mange tak for dit ærlige – det rørte mig dybt at læse om din historie. Og ja, dit brev gav meget mening. Dit spørgsmål til brevkassen går på, hvad du skal gøre for at hjælpe din far i forbindelse med hans alkoholmisbrug?
I min besvarelse til dig, vil jeg starte med at lave en lille opsummering af dit brev. Derefter vil jeg kommentere på nogle af tingene og give dig nogle råd og perspektiveringer med på vejen. Mine råd er blot forslag og er givet ud fra, hvad jeg mener, vil være det bedste for dig. Men det står dig selvfølgelig frit for, om du har lyst til at følge mine råd eller ej – du er selvfølgelig den, der ved bedst, hvad der er det bedste for dig i den situation, du står i lige nu. Derudover kan der være ting i dit brev, som jeg har misforstået eller ting, som ikke er oplyste, og som kan være forudindtaget.
Du skriver, at din far er en ”velfungerende deltids-alkoholiker”, der kun drikker i de perioder, hvor han ikke er på arbejde. Til gengæld drikker han meget i de perioder, han er hjemme, hvor han nemt bliver sur og irriteret. Og til tider mister han både bevidstheden og i nogle tilfælde desværre også besindelsen. Han har udsat dig for både fysisk vold – spark i ryggen – og psykisk vold, i form af nedladende ord – oplevelser du af gode grunde aldrig glemmer.
Din mor valgte for ca. 1 år siden valgte at forlade din far, og hun har accepteret han drikkeri og ser ham ikke, når han er beruset – din bror har til dels valgt at gøre det samme. Du vil til gengæld ikke acceptere tingenes tilstand hos din far, og du skriver, at du er fyldt op af vrede, samtidigt med at der foregår andre svære ting i dit liv, som skaber ubalance. Dit ønske er at komme videre med dit liv, men du ved ikke hvordan, for du elsker din far, og du føler, at din mor og din bror blot har givet op, og at du er den eneste, der stadig kæmper for at hjælpe ham – dit spørgsmål er: ”hvad skal jeg gøre?”
Som nævnt i indledningen, så blev jeg berørt over at læse om de oplevelser, din far har udsat dig for i alle disse år, og selvfølgelig er du ikke er den sammen søn over for din far, som du er over for din mor, fordi du netop har mistet noget respekt og tillid til din far – og det har du al mulig god grund til. Respekt og tillid fra andre er noget, man gør sig fortjent til, og det er ganske naturligt, at du har svært ved at opretholde disse følelser over for din far, når man som dig gang på gang oplever en grundlæggende svigt og mistillid fra den person, man burde kunne stole på og have tillid til – nemlig din egen far. På trods af alt, udtrykker du stor kærlighed og omsorg over for din far, og du kan også sagtens få øje på han gode sider.
Mine erfaringer med andre unge fra misbrugsfamilier siger, at de følelser du sidder med over for din far er meget typiske. Forholdet til en misbruger er ofte kompliceret i form af modsatrettede følelser som vrede og kærlighed over for misbrugeren, og det eneste man ønsker, er at hjælpe vedkommende ud af misbruget. Disse modsatrettede følelser kan skabe en del frustration, og man kan nemt komme til at fjerne fokus fra ens eget liv over på misbrugerens, fordi det kommer til at fylde alt for meget for en. Som pårørende til en misbruger, kan man være så fokuseret i forsøget på at hjælpe det andet menneske, at man kommer til at glemme at gøre det, der er bedst for en selv – at man nemt kommer til at glemme at leve sit eget liv og at passe på sig selv, fordi al fokus lægger hos misbrugeren, fordi man så inderligt ønsker at ”redde” ham/hende fra misbruget – er det mon noget, du kan nikke genkendende til? Dette er i hvert fald hvad, jeg kommer til at tænke på, når jeg læser dit brev. Hvis dette er tilfældet for dig, så vil jeg råde dig til, at du i højere grad starter med at have fokus på at passe på dig selv i alt det her – at du forsøger at skabe større fokus på dit eget liv, og på dine nære relationer, der gør dig godt. Hvis du stadig bor sammen med din far, så skal du måske overveje, om der er andre muligheder i forhold til at flytte hjemmefra – dette er igen for at passe på dig selv.
Når jeg læser dit brev, kan jeg ikke umiddelbart læse, at din far endnu har erkendt sit alkoholmisbrug – mon han har det? Dette er fundamentalt, hvis du skal kunne hjælpe ham. Hvis din far har erkendt sit alkoholmisbrug, så er det næste vigtige skridt, at din far ønsker hjælp til at komme ud af misbruget. Derfor vil mit råd til dig være, at du får klarhed over, hvor din far er i processen. Har han endnu ikke erkendt, at han har et alkoholmisbrug, så kan det være en ide, at forsøge at gøre ham bevidst om det. Et råd kunne være, at du fortæller din far, hvordan det er for dig at være hans søn – hvad det gøre ved dig – hvor meget du holder af ham – hvor meget du gerne vil hjælpe ham, og ikke mindst hvordan du fremover er nødt til at passe på dig selv, hvis du skal kunne leve med at være vidne til hans alkoholmisbrug, og de konsekvenser det har for jeres indbyrdes forhold til hinanden. Du kan evt. vælge at skrive det i et brev til ham, hvis det føles nemmere for dig. Hvis du allerede har forsøgt, og han endnu ikke vil erkende problemet, så er der desværre ikke så meget andet du kan gøre end at acceptere tingenes tilstand og evt. lader din far vide, at du er der for ham, hvis han ønsker hjælp til at komme ud af sit alkoholmisbrug, men at du fra nu af først og fremmest er nødt til at passe på dig selv.
Du kan som udgangspunkt ikke lave om på din far, og vil han ikke erkende problemet, så er din kamp en ulige kamp, du aldrig kan vinde. Jeg ved, at det for mange kan være rigtig svært at acceptere, at der ikke er så meget, man som pårørende kan gøre, medmindre misbrugeren erkender sit misbrug og ønsker at modtage hjælp. Jeg er ikke i tvivl om din kærlighed til din far, men din kærlighed til din far er ikke lig med, at du skal opgive dit eget liv i forsøget på at redde ham ud af sit alkoholmisbrug. Med det mener jeg, at du måske i højere grad skal huske at tage din egen ”iltmaske” på først – dit eget liv er det vigtigste i dit liv, og derfor skal du først og fremmest gøre det, der er bedst for dig – ikke hvad der er bedst for din far – det har din far selv ansvaret for.
Du fortjener det bedste her i livet. Du er ung og har hele livet foran dig. Jeg kan udmærket godt forstå din frustration over din far, og det er med god grund, at du reagerer på den måde, som du gør – det er en ganske naturlig og typisk reaktion, når man er vidne til de ting din far udsætter sig selv og sin egen familie for. Når jeg læser dit brev, så får jeg øje på en stærk fighter, en fighter der kæmper en kamp for at få sin far ud af et misbrug, som han måske endnu ikke har erkendt, at han har, og som derfor bliver en ulige kamp, du ikke er i stand til at vinde, medmindre han selv ønsker det – desværre. Uanset hvor meget du kæmper, så kan du ikke få din far ud af sit misbrug, medmindre han erkender problemet og ønsker at modtage hjælp til at komme ud af det. Din far har selv ansvaret for sit liv og dermed også for sit misbrug.
Når jeg læser dit brev, får jeg også øje på en ung fyr, der har mistet noget af troen på sit eget værd – er det mon sandt? Er du mon begyndt at tvivle på dig selv efter de grimme ting, din far har kaldt dig? Hvis man får at vide tilstrækkelig mange gange, at man ikke er god nok, at man er forkert på den, eller at man ikke dur til noget, så begynder man desværre nogen gange at tro på disse negative udsagn – er det mon tilfældet for dig? Jeg håber jeg tager fejl, og at du udmærket kender dit eget værd, til trods for de ting, din far har udsat dig for. For du er lige så meget værd, som alle andre og du fortjener det bedste – uanset hvad din far har fortalt dig.
